Childrens' Day and Winter Solstice celebration

December 16th

Date details +
    Room: Lakewood Center

To mark the onset of winter, Shambhala celebrates Children’s Day on or near the winter solstice. As the solstice marks the day when the daylight is shortest, and the night is the longest, light is a special characteristic of this holiday. We celebrate Children’s Day to honor our children, and to bring warmth, light and joy into this dark time of the year.

This year, we invite our children to lead us in a procession of lights into the shrine room, to illuminate and warm our center!  Children of all ages are invited, so bring your kids or grandkids to make art and enjoy a festive day, with food, music and goodies!  Battery-powered lights will be supplied.

All are invited, including family and friends, and especially children!

    The day’s schedule:

    • 10:00  Children and meditators enter the shrine room, placing lights throughout. Then, the children will create a winter mural in the community room, while we have our usual sitting and walking meditation.
    • 11:00  Seasonal reading and discussion, related to the solstice and Children’s Day
    • 11:45  As the children finish their mural, it is rumored they would like everyone in attendance to add their handprints. So let’s have some fun!
    • 12:00  Potluck lunch—All are invited to share some food, whatever you would like to bring. Whether or not you bring food, you are invited to stay for food and conversation.
    Toys for Tots

During this season of generosity, Cleveland Shambhala will collect toys to brighten the lives of children. The mission of the Toys for Tots program is "to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in Cuyahoga County.” The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation distributed toys to over 33,000 children last year, and they hope to increase that amount this year.

Please drop off donations of new, unwrapped toys at the Lakewood location of Cleveland Shambhala by Tuesday, December 18th.
