Foundation for Freedom: The Hinayana, course 1
The Buddhist path begins with the Hinayana. The Hinayana introduces core Buddhist teachings on the nature of mind, the practice of meditation, the reality of suffering, and the possibility of liberation. It examines the nature of suffering, impermanence, and egolessness, with the emphasis on personal development through meditative discipline and study.
This first course focuses on the first Noble Truth, which is the reality or truth of suffering. This suffering (Sanskrit dukkha) has the quality of anxiety. It is only by accepting the truth of that anxiety that we can work to liberate ourselves from it. A crucial part of that work is the development of Maitri, or loving-kindness, toward ourselves
The course will comprise 5 classes, Saturdays, January 4 – February 1, from 10:00 – 11:30 am. Each class will include guided meditation as well as an archived talk from nationally renowned Shambhala teachers Fleet Maull and Susan Chapman This will be followed by a group discussion, led by Barb Cromer. This course is presented in a hybrid format, i.e., in person and online. We encourage in-person for a richer experience. Please indicate your method of attendance when you register.
