Have you ever wondered how Buddhism made its way to Tibet? This series of classes in five parts explores the lives of five major founding teachers of Tibetan Buddhism and will focus on their spiritual journeys leading toward becoming fully awake and liberated practitioners. These five teachers are: Tilopa, Naropa, Marpa, Milarepa, and Gampopa. Attend this series of classes to find out more about these masters of spiritual accomplishment who embodied the wisdom that has been brought forward to the world over the past thousand years.  The dates of the classes will be: 1/23, 2/20, 3/19, 4/16, and 5/21 and take place from 8:00-8:30 pm after regular open meditation.

    GAMPOPA

This class explores the life of Gampopa, the fifth and final “founding teacher” in this series exploring the origins of the Tibetan Buddhist Kagyu lineage. It was the death of Gampopa’s wife and child that urged him towards renunciation, the taking of Buddhist vows, and becoming a monk. However, it was Milarepa who stirred his faith to the true calling of the dharma by encouraging Gampopa to leave the confines of monastic life and enter a series of solitary retreats and trials, eventually leading to his awakening. Milarepa then transmitted the entirety of the teachings to Gampopa. Gampopa is credited with establishing the Kagyu path in Tibet. Even though this could not have happened with the teachers in this series who came before him, Gampopa combined the scholastic teachings of India, monastic teachings, and contemplative teachings into a coherent and lasting system.
